Compass 31

Exists to make Jesus known by fighting human trafficking through
prevention, restoration and disciple making.

A New Best Friend

“Recently one of our survivors asked, “Will you pray that I find a good friend; one that I can share any secret with?”

“Of course!” we said.

10 days later she excitedly returned, “God answered my prayer already!”

We were curious, “How? Who is your new friend?”

Her answer left us humbled. “My friend is Jesus. Now I know that the One that I can share any of my secrets with has always been Jesus.”

A Brief History

With more than 20 years of experience in the field of human trafficking, Jenni Jessen knows the depths of trauma a body can endure. She was sold into the commercial sex trade at age four by her grandfather but God provided for her rescue and escape at age 17.

Jenni and her husband, KJ founded Compass 31 in 2011 in response to the unfolding of redemption in their own lives. Compass 31 provides a holistic model of restoration that includes safe housing, educational scholarships and discipleship for young women who have been rescued from exploitation. For more than 8 years, they provided foster care to teenage mothers and babies rescued from the sex trade.

In cooperation with Compassion International, e3 Partners and International Justice Mission, Jenni and KJ created Priceless Cube in 2012. Since that time, they have equipped national leaders from more than 40 different countries to effectively combat human trafficking through education. To date, tens of thousands of people globally have heard this high-impact prevention message.

Their beautiful and crazy family includes 6 different people groups and a dog named Ransom.

Why The Name Compass 31?

When we came across Jeremiah 31 we knew that we had not only found our name but our purpose as well. This passage confirmed that this project was His idea and setting captives free was His work. He is the Father to the fatherless and the Redeemer of the captive. He directs the broken and wounded into our care and our primary job is to direct them into restorative relationship with him.

Webster’s dictionary gives the following 2 definitions for “compass”:

n. An instrument for determining directions upon the earth’s surface by means of a magnetized bar or needle turning freely upon a pivot and pointing in a northerly and southerly direction.

v. To stretch round; to extend so as to embrace the whole; hence, to enclose, encircle, grasp or seize; as, to compass within the arms.

It is our desire to embrace those in our care and guide them on a path that will lead to their own personal discovery of the Creator who loves them and the purpose He created them for. Thus, the name for the new ministry Compass 31 was born.

“Watch now, as I bring them from the land to the north, as I gather My people from the ends of the earth. Look who is among those returning home: the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and even those giving birth—All of these together in the multitude on its way home.… In that day I will lead them beside quiet streams of water and take them upon a straight path where they will not stumble. Why? Because I am their father” – Jeremiah 31:8-9

How Does Compass 31 Work?

It is not the intention of Compass 31 to set up a welfare system enabling people to live off a steady flow of foreign money, which would belittle and demean the women we strive to help. Instead we will empower the women in the following ways
  • Pertaining to EQUALITY

    • Partner with International Justice Mission to help the girls gain legal citizenship.
    • Teach the girls to drive, help them obtain a driver’s license, and then offer a motorcycle purchase program in which they can earn and pay off their own vehicle.
    • Utilize their citizenship papers to help them gain adequate, low cost medical care.
    • Utilize their citizenship papers to empower them to vote on issues that affect their lives.
    • Provide discipleship that focuses on the unique skills, abilities and gifts of each woman being made in the image of God.
    • Provide in-depth counseling so that the girls can heal from the past traumas and begin to understand that they are worthy of love and respect.

  • Pertaining to EDUCATION

    • Help the girls gain their High School equivalency.
    • Provide for further vocation training through technical school or university.
    • Provide the girls adequate opportunity to practice driving in safe, closed courses as they study to obtain driver’s licenses.
    • Self Defense training.
    • Child rearing classes.
    • Nutritional education that focuses on the basic requirements for good health and balanced diet.
    • English classes that will more than double their income potential.
    • Weekly Bible study.
    • Work in Community Transformation PRICELESS projects that educate people in the village about the risks and realities of human trafficking.

  • Pertaining to ECONOMIC DISTRESS

    • Put in place a Matching Savings plan that allows the girls to save money for when they have finished school and are ready to move out on their own.
    • Offer Micro Business loans to girls who have finished school and need the start up costs to begin a viable business.
    • Offer Micro business loans to the family members of rescued girls so that they are empowered to improve their own financial situations and not further contribute to the “supply” of girls to the slave trade.
    • Offer a Hire-to-Study program where the girls earn a viable income based on their participation and performance in school.

Statement of Faith

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy universal and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

Compass 31 was founded in June 2011. It is a non-profit 501c3 in good standing with all legal entities.
